Homeschool Mother’s Journal ~ Week 1

In my life this week…

We did three days of school this week. Well, MOTS did 5 days of work in 4 days. Hollywood only did 3 days since she had surgery and is no longer tongue-tied. She was mostly just tired all day Thursday (day of surgery) and Friday, so I let her just rest. She seems to be back to normal and when she thinks about it, her speech has improved. We just need to get her into the habit of using good speech!

In our homeschool this week…

Reading – Hollywood is working through Explode the Code Online. She finished Book 1 and started Book 2 this week. She still loves it, although she complained about it being repetitive. What she doesn’t understand it that she needs the repetition. Anyway, I am definitely seeing an improvement in fluency from all that was covered in Book 1. We are also working through a list of sight words on flash cards. She learned/already knew the first 25 of 300, so we’ve already added the second set of 25.

MOTS has read all of the books already that were assigned through school, so she just free reads. Most of our books are in storage now except for this years Core 4, so the pickings are slim. She chose to start reading Little Women since she enjoyed the movie so much.

Math – Both girls use Teaching Textbooks and really enjoy it. MOTS is struggling with minor errors in long division, so I also have her practicing her multiplication again. Hollywood just started a unit on fractions.

History – We are starting a study of World War II this week. I hope to be finished with our Core 4 History by the end of May/first week of June. We’ll see how that works out – meaning if we sell the house, that plan may be put on hold.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

For the most part we are seeing people who work on the house (learned how windows were installed on Monday) and going places that are involved in the selling of our house. I do think a field trip to the Zoo may be in order this month!

My favorite thing this week was…

Hearing Hollywood say that reading is fun. It hasn’t been fun for her for a very long time.

What’s working – Teaching Textbooks, Explode the Code Online, educational shows on PBS and Netflix

What’s Not Working – Nothing at the moment.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

We took two big bins of manipulatives and curriculum to storage this morning. I miss them, but we are really trying to work lean while the house is on the market and while we are building. I’ll be glad to get them back!
